Those tree-hugging Tories

The Conservatives will be unveiling their environmental strategy tomorrow in Vancouver.

There's $300 million for public transit. The preview doesn't say if it's ongoing funding. Probably not is my guess. Still, it's better than a kick in the teeth. There's something else in there about retrofitting school buses... Okay, based on the preview, it doesn't look like that much. Still, at least the commitments seem realistic.

Environmental groups, meanwhile, are asking for the moon. One of their key demands is a recommitment to the Kyoto protocols.

Hmmm. Let's see. Do the Conservatives really want to commit political suicide by presiding over the biggest economic decline since the Great Depression? Because thanks to years of Liberal lip service to its signed commitment, that's pretty much what would be required to meet the Kyoto targets. We'd have to pretty much close down ever factory in Ontario just to meet a target that few other countries are able to meet without buying pollution credits from Russia.

Let's not do that.
