Canada: rogue nation?

The U.N. Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination "remains concerned at the extent of the dramatic inequality in living standards still experienced by aboriginal peoples" in Canada.

Rightly so. The status quo, in which native people have the worst outcomes in virtually every index of quality of life in our country, is just not acceptable.

Of course, it's not like Canadian governments haven't tried different solutions. Self-government, tax benefits, multi-million dollar settlements, affirmative action... it's all been tried.

Which is not to say that Canadians should just give up. On the contrary, for everyone's benefit, solutions must be found.

Whether that means little steps like allowing private ownership of housing on native land or more drastic action like doing away with the entire system of reserves, who knows? But for all our sakes, change better come soon.

It is my opinion that change cannot come until the patriachial society that is rampant within the Native cuture is stopped.

And this will not be stopped until the government stops treating Natives like their own society and allows full integration into Canadian culture.

So it is a catch 22 - those who benefit from the current patriachial society do not want things to change and they consistently vote for political parties that do not make those sorts of changes.

the only real solution to the native issue is very simple.

    GET A JOB

Every native child born in the last 30 years has never been to a residential school, has had every and all the same opportunities to succeed as any other child. Time to quit feeling sorry for people that don't or won't pick themselves up and get on with their lives. Nobody is holding them back but themselves, and their insistance that they are victims. The real victims are the taxpayers
