Vancouver wins, again! Surprise, surprise
Vancouver is the best city in Canada to live in, according to the latest poll from noted opinion gatherers Angus Reid.
Well, that clinches it. Uh, well, I guess the last poll already put us over the top. Or, maybe the one before that. West coasters have been feeling the love for while now, but it never gets old.
The analysis of the actual poll results in the Province took a little shine off the honor: As reporter Elaine O'Connor noted:
We're not the place to go to do business or find a job. We don't rank high for arts and culture or sports, nightlife, dining or even shopping. And we're certainly not the safest city in Canada.
Still, Vancouver's own citizenry are proud enough of our Pacific metropolis to vote for our own neck of the woods. That certainly should count for more than the opinion of people from out of province who haven't seen firsthand what the west coast has to offer.
Yup, we're proud of our green little burgh.
Meanwhile, in some darkened Toronto pub, jealous conspirators are moving ahead with their nefarious plot.

Sorry to say it out loud to all the civic boosters, but Vancouver is the Ted Mack Amateur Hour without the professional host.
Just as with the inflation numbers (the consumer price index) small matters such as having the means to eat, shelter, etc. oneself and one's family are ignored. This is why the lack of employers isn't considered a problem.
Not only that, but we chronically underpay for whole classes of work here. Think about the special laws for the technology sector (a sector of special interest according to the BC Liberals' growth plans for BC) that allow unlimited work, without overtime - a special exemption piled on top of wages that are generally 20-40% less than you can get elsewhere. These are mobile people with opportunities and we bleed them, our own little brain drain, constantly. You can't survive on scenic views alone!
Add our idiotic and inept civic administration (I shudder to think of how much garbage and recycling will be piled up in my garage - and how it will smell - before "I'm getting what I want if it kills everyone" Sam Sullivan finally gets over himself and deigns to actually talk to his civic workers at the bargaining table. Millions for a "civil city" or "green streets" but here we are, Canada's third largest city, and many streets don't even have curbs, something small towns in other provinces seem to have figured out how to build and treated as a priority.
I came here from Ontario in 2000 and after seven years I have discovered that almost all my income comes from out of province, my clients out of province are far more interesting anyway, and I'm getting tired of long distance flights to make up for the deficiencies of Vancouver. I know I won't be staying. City or country, I'd like to live somewhere real - and this puffed-up pile isn't it.

Blame the unions for your current problem - greed, greed, greed.
Now, I'm from rural Ontario and I have to say BC is the most beautiful province in Canada.
All cities have problems so to pick on Vancouver is stupid.
Congratulations!
