CityView: Megaman vs Polish Immigrant

Published by at 12:05 pm under Uncategorized

I’ve hesitated about viewing the notorious Youtube video of Megaman vs Polish Immigrant for over a month. The original footage of Robert Dziekanski’s death at Vancouver International Airport following RCMP use of a taser on the man who was clearly not resisting was very disturbing. I feared what I might see again.

But by this time, almost 140,000 people have viewed the video. I finally took a look, and can say without a doubt that the video is a legitimate commentary on the incident and a clear condemnation of the RCMP’s actions. Some have said that this video is in poor taste, or at worst, disrespectful to the family of the deceased. But on the whole, the video quite clearly comes down hard on the RCMP officers who caused Dziekanski’s death.

The video may look cartoonish (as the original Megaman game was), but it is simply Op Ed in new media format. And in the end, this video may have had more of an impact than a lot of the print media’s opinion columns and letters to the editor, by virtue of its creative presentation and the power of buzz marketing.

I agree and I’ve blogged about it here.

I am a little concerned that the video has been taken down — presumably to protect the author from angry responses. Do you know the artist’s name?

The creator’s name is Mike Greenway. Perhaps it violated Youtube’s terms of service?

It’s nice to know that people out there would like to comment on the RCMP’s actions. However, wouldn’t writing an article such as this one do the job a lot better than the cartoon/game ? It was in such poor taste. I saw the family’s reaction to it on TV (Polish newschannel) and they were all crying at the thought that their son’s death could be used towards the creation of a satirical piece posted on Youtube…for the whole world to see. I think that there is nothing right about what this guy did. If he wanted to comment on the situation he really should have thought twice about putting Robert’s face in the game. I just don’t comprehend how this could be regarded as funny, or even satirical. And yeah I get it, it’s meant as an attack on the RCMP but come on, there are a million different ways that this could have been approached. It definitely speaks of this Mike’s level of intelligence… ugh. disgusting.!

I’m still a little bit divided on this one. Yes, it’s tragic that the family of Robert would have seen the video. On the other hand, the video is just so startling that it leaves an impression that is not soon forgotten – which is the point of it. Yeah, it’s horrific – but do the ends justify the means? I’m honestly stuck with this one.
