I think I'd start by getting all those social workers, police officers, and medical health professionals to read Gabor Mate's In the Realm Hungry Ghosts.

Then I'd get Gregor Robertson (whom I also liked when I met him at an Alliance for Arts party a couple of years ago) to dig deep into his civic pockets and start buying up buildings. Because the real solution to homelessness is affordable homes.

I'd actually like to see the stats on homelessness in Montreal (where housing, particularly rental housing) is still cheap and Vancouver, where nothing relating to housing is.

I can't help but agree with many of the points that Buzz is making (surprisingly, as I do like Gregor Robertson). There were SO many things that Gregor did WRONG. I am just hoping he'll do them right next time!

Re: Guess What: Yeah, I've read the Charter. But like anywhere else in the West, we have the ability to interpret and even amend the Charter when necessary to obtain a desired result, going to court if necessary to ensure that interpretation is valid. I believe that taking mentally ill people off the streets and giving them health care and other support does not violate the rights of said people. I've been wrong before, but it seems the Charter is a red herring in this case.

So Gregor is PROMISING to end homelessness by 2014? Can he also make it rain chocolate cakes?

Obama has the calm, stern look of a man who is ready for business. The way Gregor conducted his campaign and partied on election night, he is a big dreamer who is waaaay over head.

The twitterjacking, the name calling, the transit fine, the pettiness displayed by Gregor during the campaign, and his incredulous "Oh Shit, Now What?" look on the front page of Sunday's paper should have everyone in the city worried.

To turn a phrase. "I know Obama, Gregor. You, are no Barack Obama."

"Empower these teams to take these people off the streets for a more thorough mental health evaluation."

Have you read the Canadian Charter of Rights & Freedoms ?

The unintended consequences of Mr. Trudeau's brilliant Liberalism is that you can't "just take people of the streets". They have every right to be there and to refuse any and all interventions in their lives - well intentioned or not.

Very sad, but very true.
