I'm always asking others for their views on these questions, since one big drawback of self-defined social circles augmented through social media tech is the tendency to live in a bubble. I always want to know what people around me are really thinking. It sounds like you've got a very well-balanced view on the big issues, which I was happy to hear. You're right that it certainly is hard to get one's head around the apparently base motivations behind this conflict while living in one of the best-functioning multicultural countries on the planet.
