This Isn’t Funny

Published by at 7:45 am under human rights

Notice to stand-up comedians everywhere: if you respond to an obnoxious heckler in the audience in a way that injures “dignity, feelings, and self respect”, you may be liable to pay fines of $22,000 or more.

Total insanity masquerading as political correctness — brought to you by the apparatchiks at the B.C. Human Rights Tribunal.

The ruling says Earle lied about her being a heckler.

My wife and I have been to a few comedy clubs and at one of the first we went to (The Comedy Store in LA) the comedian suggested that my wife was arousing herself because she was scratching her chest. I almost fell of my chair laughing and my wife, although a little embarrassed at being singled out in such a manner, even managed a slight smile.

We learned our lesson and from that point on have always sat at the back at comedy clubs and refrained from touching ourselves or even talking with each other while the comedian is on stage.

Something else we’ve learned over the years is how many comedians live for that ad-lib exchange with the audience. Some very funny stuff comes from it. With some comedians it’s their whole act.

I hope this boneheaded HRT hasn’t hurt that free exchange. I hope the comedian takes this to the next level, whatever that might be.
