Look What I Just Bought at the Game Store

Oh yes. There will be blood.

Once I can find some dudes to help me set up all the little pieces and re-enact WW2, that is.

I was playing Risk the other night and thinking, this is all super-fun and stuff, but there’s something less than awesome about commanding my nameless armies to attack random territories via land and sea routes that have never really been used to wage war at any time in human history.

I just need a bit more historical context in my bloodletting.

UPDATE. Just played my first game. Man, did that suck.

OK, it wasn’t that bad. Maybe. You kind of expect that a later version of the game is going to be an improvement — and from a rules perspective, it actually was (I’ll give them that). But the game board is way smaller than before (Europe is a clogged mess, in particular). After playing for a couple of hours, I still wasn’t completely sure I could differentiate half of the warships on sight. Last, the game doesn’t come with any IPC dollars! Am I supposed to keep track of my cash on hand with Monopoly money?

This game is not easy to begin with. Trying to get a bunch of new players to enjoy it was made immeasurably more difficult with a lame user experience. Not awesome — which really sucks, because I was looking forward to reliving some of the glories of my youth with the new version of the game.

UPDATER. 21/1/2013. Tried this game again after some creative work with a white-out marker. Much better play experience — I’ll give in a 7 out of 10 (up from 2 out of 10).

    My favorite game growing up.

I have this as well, but haven’t had the patience to read through all the rules. Let us know how it goes, and i may give it another try.

    Hey Byron,

I used to play this a bunch as a teenager. It was very fun. The most difficult thing is just wrangling a bunch of people to play.

    Cheers.
