Keep Our Roads Safe

As my loyal readers know, I like few thinks more than a cold pint on a hot day. But if I ever saw a sideways-stumbling friend of mine about to get behind the wheel of their car, I’d give them a karate chop to the throat and liberate their car keys. And I’d expect the same courtesy from my colleague if I ever tried to do the same thing.

On that note, I’m pleased to offer this public service announcement:

Impaired driving can strike anyone, anytime, anywhere.
Come out and Walk in support of keeping our roads safe.

Bring your friends, family, and your co-workers to the annual MADD Metro Vancouver 5km signature walk, Strides for Change!

Every step taken and pledge made will help raise funds and awareness for MADD Metro Vancouver’s programs and services that will serve to keep our children and communities safer.

When: Sunday, September 12, 2010
Registration: 10:00 am, Walk begins: 11:00 am
Where: Central Park, Burnaby (near picnic area)
What: A 5km non-competitive walk/wheelchair event
Why: To raise awareness & to enhance the health & safety of our communities!

A memorial wall will be there for family and friends to
remember those loved ones injured or killed by
an impaired driver.

My Latest Hate Mail From Illiterate Weirdos

Lately, I’ve been devoting a fair bit of blog space to Turkey’s role in the Middle East, so I’ve been receiving attention from a new class of weirdo.

I get a fair bit of hate mail from people who can barely spell, but this rambling stream of consciousness from muavenet_06@hotmail.com seemed funnier than usual. I especially enjoyed the part about genital herpes.

Jonathan narvey called sucka.someone is using your name to ask questions on yahoo travel Turkey section.

you better open your fukin eyes and stop this guy by reporting him.

if these are really your words about the kurdish,fukk you bastard.

Republic of Turkey is not a banana republic that will act w your comments.

Go deal with problems within Canada,as your soldiers are the most fat booty soldiers in nato,or %50 of your women suffers genital herpes.

The candle will not enlight it s bottom as i see you close your eyes to the problems in Canada but you deal with the problems of kurdish.

Kurdish got the best jobs and places on the coast of touristic cities earning more cash than any average Turkish citizen.

The ones who suffer from terrorare the ones who did not educate themselves and their kids.

If you do not speak the local language in any european country you get nothing.

We are Turkish and speaking Turkish since 1000 years.When we go to Afghanistan where you are strangers we speak Turkish and move on.

So don’t you get in to those matters again.

On a side note, someone really was impersonating my in the Yahoo! Travel Answers section. They were mis-spelling my name, but their intention was clear, since as far as I know, there are no other Jonathon (or Jonathan) Narvey’s in the universe. So I did report the impersonator.

Vancouver Bloggers. Heed The Call of the Meetup

It’s that time of the month again. No, not “dance the tango with Shane” day. Even better: it’s time for a Vancouver Blogger Meetup.

It’s happening this Thursday in the heart of Vancouver. See all the details and RSVP at the Vancouver Blogger Meetup page.

This time, we’re meeting at a super-friendly venue on the corner of East Broadway and Kingsway. Come on down and meet the people who help make the Vancouver blogosphere retain its spherical shape and generous volume.

One important note: Our Town Cafe is licensed, so if you’re not keen on caffeine in the evening, they also have a fine selection of fine frothy beverages.

This will also be a social event, though we’re asking our participants to introduce themselves for one minute maximum answering the question: “What do you blog about” or “what would you like to blog about?”

Vancouver Blogger Meetup An Insanely Successful Event

Better late than never, right? This time out, the Vancouver Blogger Meetup was a purely social event. No workshops. No seminars. Just some catching up with friends and meeting newcomers over some beer.

A few highlights:

1. For the first 15 minutes of the meetup, I didn’t get to talk very much because I was too busy chewing and wiping tremendous gobs of barbecue sauce from my face and fingers. Next time, I might just order something besides chicken wings.

2. Jan Karlsberg was taking notes and later produced an excellent roundup of the VBM here. Thanks, man! You really are a Great Dane.

Jan also quite correctly dissuaded me from elaborating too deeply in a podcast about the size and quality of my private parts. Vancouver Blogger Meetups: nuttin’ but claaaaass.

3. I got a free copy of John Chow’s Make Money Online. Now I have to write a review or else John’s going to charge me $20 for the thing.

So far, I’m liking it. As my colleague Shane Birley noted the next day, it’s written in a pretty informal yet informative style.

There are good tips covering the essentials, such as maintaining focus in your blog. For instance, on the road to blogging success, don’t follow the path of another type of failed enterprise:

“Restaurants that try to be all things to all people, offering a wide-ranging menu with a whole bunch of mediocre dishes, ultimately fail. This lack of focus means that no single item on your menu is getting the attention it deserves, and nothing will ever stand out as the superstar.”

Exactly. Which is why my personal blog at jnarvey.com, about politics, social media, sustainability, Afghanistan, technology, Israel, Vancouver events and whatever happens to grab my attention in my Google Reader, will never take off with hundreds of thousands of fans. But I figured that out years ago, so no hard feelings.

4. I drank two St. Augustine’s Pilsners. I know, I know. Not up to my usual impressive tally, but what the hell. Everyone else was drinking diet coke. F**kers.

5. I did record some non-disgusting podcasts which should be online in the near future. Will let you know when they’re up.

I help organize a semi-regular little local event called the Vancouver Blogger Meetup. Looking forward to seeing some of my fellow Vancouver bloggers this week for a pint. Here are the details:

VANCOUVER BLOGGER MEETUP

Date and Time: Wednesday, April 28, starting at 6:30 pm
Location: St. Augustines, 2360 Commercial Drive

The next Vancouver Blogger Meetup is happening next week at St. Augustine’s on Commercial Drive (nicely located near the Skytrain and all major bus routes). Grab a pint, pull up a chair and meet some of the people behind the local blogs you know and love.

This is a meet-and-greet. No seminars or workshops this time out. Instead, we want to provide an opportunity for bloggers to talk, inspire each other and possibly even begin some fun and fruitful collaborations later on. Mostly, though, we’re here for the beer.

So, whether you blog about politics, fashion, food, local events or anything else, we’d like to meet you. You know that “conversation” that social media types are always talking about? Well, it’s time to continue the conversation in person.

In my other life as a copywriting nerd, I’ll be covering all of the New Ventures BC seminars for the next while. I really enjoyed the first one earlier this evening, focusing on “Assessing the Opportunity“. I found one easy-to-remember list for ways to turn your business idea into insane “swimming-in-money” success to be particularly worth noting:

* Find mentors to expand your vision
* Don’t overplan – take action
* Hire people who are smarter than you.
* Tailor your elevator pitch to different audiences
* Play to win but be willing to risk failure
* Acknowledge the competition. Never say “there is no competition!”
* Don’t let the critics get you down. Use the feedback. Adapt and overcome.
* Have fun and don’t take yourself too seriously.

Sick and Tired of Being Sick and Tired

Readers of this site will have noted that blogging is light these days. No, I have not abandoned my website. I’ve just been sick.

As such, I’ve had to prioritize my activities over the past few weeks. Sleeping, eating healthy stuff, doing just enough actual work to meet the regular deadlines of my copywriting clients and finally, attending to social media.

A fog seems to have lifted from my feverish brain today. Looking forward to rejoining the universe once more. Cheers.
